U.S Customs Awards Modernization Prime
System Integration Contract
Customs and trade community alike. The e-Customs Partnership will begin with:
(1) establishing the Prime Integration Contractor's program office;
(2) enterprise architecture and engineering to ensure an enterprise view
in developing the technical architecture and infrastructure; and
(3) planning and defining requirements for the first increment of ACE.
Funding for these three tasks amounts to $25 million, while the overall project is estimated at $1.3 billion.
U.S. Customs Awards Modernization Prime System Integration Contract U.S. Customs is long overdue for a computer upgrade and steps have now been made to bring them closer to that objective. U.S. Customs has announced the awarding of the Customs Modern-ization Prime Integration Contract to the "e-Customs Partnership" with IBM Corporation being the
prime contractor.
In addition to IBM, Lockheed Martin Corporation, KPMG Consulting,Computer Sciences Corporation, Sandler & Travis Trade Advisory Services,Booz-Allen & Hamilton, ITS Services are among the major players not tomention more than 40 other small businesses.
The scope of the modernization is to include the reengineering of Customs operational processes, development of technology infra-structure, computer systems and associated software, in addition to Customs commercial, enforcement and administrative operations.
Initially, the focus will be on the Automated Commercial Environment (ACE). ACE is intended
to streamline import operations and benefit both

Filing GST/HST Returns by Telephone

You may receive a call from the CCRA (Canada Customs & Revenue Agency).
The agency has introduced an electronic filing alternative to some business clients. Certain criteria apply:

  • CCRA invitation only
  • Must have been filing GST/HST returns with the CCRA for at least a year
  • Return must have a nil balance or refund of $10,000 or less
  • Return cannot include a claim for a rebate amount on line 111 and
  • Return being filed does not require a rebate application to be filed along with it.

Qualifying clients will be given an access code, whereupon they can make a toll free call and follow simple directions to proceed. THe service has been tested in Atlantic Canada since May 2000 and is now being expanded so that GST/HST TELEFILE will be aailable six days a week in all provinces and territories where returns are filed. Are You Shipping Dangerous Goods?

The Canadian International Freight Forwarders Association (CIFFA) has announced its fall schedules for Dangerous Goods Training Programs. For more information regarding the various training programs available to

These courses cover air, ocean and

Clothing and Textile Quotas

January 1, 2002 marks the implementation of the third phase of quota elimination under the Agreement on Textiles and Clothing. The Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade has confirmed that there will be no change to the current procedures. Controlled goods leaving quota countries prior to January 1, 2002 must be accompanied by the appropriate license or certificate. Those goods no longer subject to
quota as of January 1, 2002 must be shipped on or after that date in order to be allowed entry without a license or certificate.

Food Advisory
The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has issued an advisory on all imports of whole grain corn for seed, feed, food or other purposes and corn feed by-products (such as corn gluten meal). These products must have documentation indicating that Starlink T corn is not contained therein. Should shipments containing corn not be accompanied by the necessary documentation they will be refused entry into Canada. Further information regarding this may be obtained at CFIA's web site:
