Having Difficulty Obtaining The Right Information For U.S. Customs?

The ever-changing landscape of U.S. Customs laws and regulations continue to cause many of our customers headaches and sleepless nights. It's no wonder, U.S. Customs is just one of the many governmental agencies currently in the process of re-writing their regulations and statutes. How does a company keep up with this work in progress and remain compliant? Those of us who work in the industry on a daily basis reach out to the many governmental web sites for the latest and most current information. Most sites include archival "warehouses" that include past legislation and/or sample government documents for easy downloading.

Here is a list of some web sites to help you navigate the sea of international commerce:

www.customs.ustreas.gov
(US Customs Service)

www.wto.org
(World Trade Organization)

www.ustr.gov
(US Trade Representative)

www.doc.gov
(US Department of Commerce)

www.access.gpo.gov
(US Government Printing Office, including The Federal Register)

www.naftaworks.org
(NAFTA information sponsored by Mexican government)

Good luck and happy sailing!

This date may still change depending on when the necessary legislation is passed.

Canada-US Softwood Lumber Agreement to End on 31 March 2001

The Department of Foreign Affairs & International Trade (DFAIT) announced on February 26 that the Canada-US Softwood Lumber Agreement, in effect since April 1, 1996, will terminate on March 31, 2001. During the past five years, Canada has voluntarily restricted the quantity of softwood lumber exports

We're Moving - the Pearson
International Airport Office

Effective Monday, April 2, 2001, our Pearson International Airport release operations and staff in Toronto will be moving to our Toronto Regional Centre on Eglinton Avenue W., just south of the airport property.

As construction of a new terminal building will encroach on the existing cargo facilities at Pearson, the existing facilities will be razed beginning in April. As such, we are compelled to vacate the premises.
On Monday, April 2, 2001, you can reach our Pearson International Airport release operations staff at 416 622-3777. The new direct facsimile line to our Pearson release staff will be 416 622-3928. The cell phone number for after hours calls to our Pearson release staff will remain unchanged at 905 677-3362.

to the U.S. in return for the absence of legal challenges from the U.S.

Minister for International Trade, Pierre Pettigrew, has met with the new US Trade Representative, Mr. Zoelleck, in Washington and this subject was apparently included on the agenda. There is no Canadian support for a new Agreement and, after March 31 DFAIT expects that softwood lumber will return to the NAFTA rules that prevailed prior to the Agreement.. To date the two countries have not determined what they will do in the immediate future, although DFAIT has indicated that it will continue to consult with stakeholders.
